Follow-up and Aftercare
The LAP-BAND® System depends on limiting the patient's food intake, reducing their appetite and slowing digestion, and on their motivation and commitment to a new lifestyle. Aftercare and long-term lifestyle changes are the most important factors in achieving and maintaining weight loss.
In order to optimize safe and effective weight loss, the band must be adjusted to limit food intake without causing difficulty in swallowing or regurgitation.
Patients typically visit their surgeon six weeks after surgery to have the LAP-BAND® System adjusted for the first time. Subsequent visits can continue every four to six weeks for at least one year; however this may vary with each patient as long-term adjustments may be necessary.
Factors Indicating a Well-adjusted LAP-BAND® System Include:
- Safety and patient comfort
- A healthy rate of weight loss (1.5-2.0 lbs per week)
- Satiety (no hunger between meals) and satiation (small meals provide early satisfaction)
