Determining Patient Eligibility
To be considered eligible for LAP-BAND® System surgery the patient should:
- Have failed non-surgical weight loss (diet, pharmaceutical therapy, behavior modification, exercise)
- Have a BMI ≥ 40
- Have a BMI ≥ 35 and associated severe comorbid conditions
- Be willing to adhere to post-operative care and follow-up
- Are aware of and accept the operative risks
- At least 100 pounds above estimated ideal weight
Laparoscopic bariatric surgery is not recommended for patients who:
- Are younger than 18 years
- Have conditions that may make the risk of surgery greater than the benefits
- Are unwilling or unable to comply with the required lifelong dietary, exercise, and medical requirements
- Are currently or may become pregnant
