Body Mass Index
Body Mass Index (BMI) is perhaps the most important single guideline in assessing obesity. BMI is determined by dividing a person's weight in pounds by the square of their height in inches, multiplied by a factor of 703: weight (lbs.)/height (in)2 x 703
Use our BMI Calculator to determine your patient's BMI.
This index is valid for both men and women. However, because muscle weighs more than fat, it may overestimate body fat in athletes or those with a muscular build. Conversely, it may underestimate body fat in older persons and those who have lost muscle mass.

Classifications of BMI:2
| Normal weight: | 18.5 - 24.9 kg/m2 |
| Overweight: | 25 - 29.9 kg/m2 |
| Obesity (Class I): | 30 - 34.9 kg/m2 |
| Obesity (Class II): | 35 - 39.9 kg/m2 |
| Morbid obesity (Class III): | ≥ 40 kg/m2 |
If your patient has a BMI ≥ 40 or a BMI ≥ 35 and associated severe comorbidities (Obesity Classes II and III), they are eligible for laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding.
